I’ve been in Asia before this trip to Indonesia. I spent a month in China, a few days in Taiwan, a few weeks in Thailand, a few weeks in Japan. I knew before going to China that it would be different from our reality here in North America. And it was. I was quite shocked on a few occasions. Partly because I sometimes couldn’t understand a single thing and wasn’t able to communicate, partly because I realized that we live in luxury here compared to other places around the world.
But when I stepped foot in Indonesia, China looked good compared to what I was seeing! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying anything bad about Indonesia, I’m just saying that I was shocked! Even more than when I stepped foot in continental China.
When we got out of Yogyakarta’s airport into our taxi, the road we followed let quite an impression on me. I thought: this must be a suburb and we’ll get to the city soon. But then we got to the hotel. And it was still the same scenery. And when we got downtown, still the same!
I must say that at that time, I was really out of my element! But I loved it! So I got my camera out and started snapping away!
Have you ever been really thrown out of your comfort zone while travelling? How did you react? And where was it?
