Sunset At The Rock Bar Bali – Ayana Resort

After spending some time in Ubud, where I rode a motorbike for the first and probably last time of my life, we headed south to the Jimbaran area of Bali, which is just south of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport.

I chose to stay at the Rimba Jimbaran Bali, which is a fantastic hotel in my opinion. More on that in a later post.

The hotel is part of the Ayana Resort & Spa Bali and overlooks the Jimbaran Bay.

Before getting there, I had never heard about the Rock Bar Bali. But soon enough, we were told that it was the best place in the area to watch the sunset.

I thought: “Of course they will say that, they want us to go there and spend some money” !

I was wrong. It really was the best spot in the area! Let me explain…

The first thing to note is that the resort is not exactly at sea level. There are some big cliffs there, so you actually have to walk down quite a lot to get to the beach, as pictured below. (I really wish I owned one of the houses that you can see on that picture!)

Who says big cliffs usually says stunning scenery.

When you mix Cliffs + Sea + Big Rocks + Sunset + Good drinks + Good food, it gives you a pretty amazing evening.

So our first night there, we took the shuttle from the Rimba Jimbaran to the Ayana Resort, where the Rock Bar Bali was located. Unfortunately for us, we got there too late and there was no more room for us down at the Rock Bar. We were not sad however, for two reasons.

First: We didn’t know yet what to expect down at the Rock Bar.

Second, there was a setup with chairs and tables along the cliff where we could watch the sunset while enjoying a nice drink and some snack. We were happy campers!

I set up my GoPro on a chair with my small GorillaPod to do a time-lapse (that is included in this video), ordered a Bintang, and we were off to a nice sunset watching!

After the sunset, we were able to go down to the Rock Bar to have a look at what everyone was raving about since a lot of people only stay to watch the sunset.

Even if it was getting darker, it was such a lovely setting that we decided to have a few more drinks there! But we promised ourselves to get there early the next day.

So take note: If you are in the area, make sure you get there plenty of time before the sunset if you want to have (good) seats down at the Rock Bar Bali.

As planned, on the next day, we got there (really) early and were able to choose any seats we wanted! We actually switched places a few times, and we made sure to take a lot of pictures of the Rock Bar.

There is an elevator (I’m not quite sure how to call it – Escalator? Funicular? Gondola?) that you take down the cliff. You can take the elevator back up, or walk up the stairs that are not too far away.

As you will see from the next pictures, there is a large variety of seating options. Be aware that on the lower part of the Rock Bar, the waves sometimes come high enough to splash people sitting there. You have ben warned!

After taking a few pictures, we settled in and watched another beautiful sunset in Bali!

So there you have it! The Rock Bar Bali at Ayana Resort, located in the Jimbaran Bay area of Bali, just south of the airport. If you’re in that area, make sure to check it out! It’s a really great place to hang out for a few hours!
